George Gershwin (1898-1937), a Russian American of Jewish origin, studied classical music in his early years, but soon gave up and turned to pop music to compose for Broadway stage plays. In 1924, he was commissioned by the famous jazz orchestra conductor Whitman to compose Rhapsody in blue for Piano and Orchestra. After that, George Gershwin tried to develop his “Symphony Jazz” by combining classical and jazz music, and finally became a master of music integrating pop and jazz. Early in his creative career, George Gershwin had the ambition to become a serious musician. So when Paul Whitman invited him to write a jazz Concerto for the modern music experiment concert, George Gershwin was interested in writing serious music with jazz elements. But Whiteman’s deadline was too tight, and he had already announced that George Gershwin would compose for the concert and play piano solo himself. So George Gershwin had no way out.
George Gershwin is said to have composed the song on a journey to Boston. He later described it as: “it was on the train, and you could hear the sonorous rhythm and the rumbling crash sound I often hear music in the depths of the noise. It was there that I suddenly constructed from the beginning to the end – even on paper — ” Only a week after returning from Boston, George Gershwin completed the piano score of the whole piece, except for a few brilliant pieces of piano solo. As for those colorful passages, he is going to leave them to improvise at the premiere.
After the music was finished, George Gershwin agonized over the title of the piece until it was only a few days before the premiere. Because blue is exactly the same word as blues, which originated from African American labor songs and spiritual songs, it eventually adopted the name of Rhapsody in blue. Rhapsody in blue is a single movement concerto written for Piano and Orchestra, in which the impromptu expression of the theme is organically combined with the development of symphony. The mode and harmony of black blues music, the strong syncopation rhythm and glide effect of jazz music all give this novel a distinctive color. In this work, George Gershwin also has great ingenuity in the arrangement of paragraphs with totally different emotions, such as lyric and dramatic, dance and singing.
American pianist Earl Wilder is the lead pianist in RCA’s record, while the famous Arthur Federer conducts the Boston Public orchestra as the concerto. This disc has also been rated by TAs as “fever day dish”.
